On the 7-8 February, Marianne Péron-Doise, CRIMARIO strategic advisor, took part to a 1,5 track EU-India conference on maritime security organized by the SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) and the National Maritime Foundation with the support of the EU Delegation to India. In his opening speech, the head of the EU Delegation to India, Ambassador Tomasz Kozlowski, underlined EU and India convergence on regional and global issues and the commitment of the two parts to expand cooperation in the maritime domain area.
During two intense days of discussions, officials, academics and navy officers from EU and India (EEAS, EUNAVFOR, CRIMARIO, Indian Navy, NMF, Indian MOFA) exchanged strategic perspectives on the maritime security risks and opportunities in the Indian Ocean Region, IOR to identify areas of shared interests.
Combating piracy, strengthening maritime governance and the rule of law at sea and expanding cooperative maritime domain awareness in the IOR were identified as future directions for bilateral coordination and cooperation.
It was noted that the Indian Navy’s focus on enhancing MDA through information sharing cooperation and expertise development is opening the door for closer relations between the Information Fusion Center-Indian Ocean region, IFC-IOR, launched in December 2018 and the EU CRIMARIO project. During a visit of the IFC-IOR organized in the margin of the workshop, the CRIMARIO representative and the Director of IFC-IOR discussed of enhancing exchange of information in the IOR through inter-action and collaboration with the IORIS platform.
